Curious About Sizing?

Given the massive variety of clothing we carry, a standard sizing guide is incredibly helpful for customers seeking the best fit.

Please understand that surplus varies widely in fit and cut and this sizing chart is general advice rather than tailor-level fitting.

Nearly every military has different sizing charts and schemes, which is why we've taken the time to put together this brief tutorial.

Jacket & Shirt Sizing

In absence of an established military size chart, we measure each jacket or shirt from armpit to armpit to get a rough idea of how it fits. If a garment is between sizes, we mark it one size down. For example, if a shirt measures 19.75" from pit to pit, it is marked as a small rather than medium.

To measure pit to pit, close up your shirt or jacket and measure from armpit to armpit.

This is our measurement guide that we use to measure garments without an existing military size chart:

14"-15" PtP = XXS

16-17" PtP = Extra Small

18"-19" PtP = Small

20-21" PtP = Medium

22-23" PtP = Large

24-25" PtP = Extra Large

26-27" PtP = XXL

28-29" PtP = 3XL

Pant Sizing

We typically convert pants to US waist and inseam sizes. If a pair of pants is between sizes, we mark it one size down. For example, if a pair of pants measures as a 33 waist, it is marked as a 32 waist.

To take these measurements we lay a pair of pants flat on the ground. We then measure across the waist and double the measurement. For example, if a pair of pants measures 16" across the waist it will fit a US 32 waist.

To determine inseam we measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the cuff. For example, it a pair of pants measures 30" from the crotch seam to the bottom of the cuff we will list it as a 30 inseam or 30L.

      My new favorite jacket

I was surprised by the weight of the jacket (my first field jacket). It's much heavier than it looks. It's very warm, but it breathes well enough to keep you from overheating. Add in the comfortability and storage space, and it's easily my new favorite jacket.

      Great Daily Jacket

Perfect medium weight jacket for everyday use. Was a bit worried ordering a large since I usually wear an extra large, but honestly it's the perfect size. Pattern has held up great considering the age, and aside from the veil being torn out of mine it's in super good condition. Very happy with my purchase.

      Taz 57 Alpenflage field jacket

Better than expected. I live at the foothills of the Berkshires the Alpenflage pattern for autumn winter or spring really works well in this environment. The jacket is slightly faded but very well made and heavy duty. The pockets are well placed and very practical can hold quite a bit of kit. What really surprised me were the back pockets which are at lower back it is like having a built in but pack. Those pocket leave plenty of room to wear a pack of any kind. Wish I would have bought one of the packs designed for this system I see how perfectly it would integrate. The size is slightly smaller than a Medium sized M81 field jacket if that helps if you think of purchasing. I absolutely love this jacket

I look way better in this than the model

One of the best jackets I've ever owned, camo is beautiful, warm, large, plenty of pockets. Probably order a size up, but even if you order your exact size it's excellent.

Please read our Sizing Guide to eliminate unnecessary returns. Sleeves on these run a little short, so please size up if you prefer longer sleeves that may cover parts of your hand.

Looking for a superbly utilitarian and practical jacket? We've got you covered! The Alpenflage field jacket is the most pocket-heavy piece of surplus we've ever seen.

Swiss military surplus is also famously durable. Heavy cotton canvas fabric, heavy stitching. You can beat up Swiss surplus, it’s made to take lots of punishment and be easily repairable.

TAZ 57 Alpenflage Camo & Its History

TAZ 57 "Alpenflage" is a Swiss variety of German Leibermuster. Some sources say that the Swiss obtained the pattern directly from WWII-era German uniform textile manufacturing lines from Czechoslovakia sometime postwar.

      The Alpenflage Field Jacket

These field jackets were issued to combat troops of the Swiss army. After 1970 these uniforms were issued alongside a daypack that buckled onto the jacket itself, taking the place of traditional load bearing gear in use by other militaries at the time. The remainder of the combat loadout was stored in the jacket's TEN pockets. Yes, we said ten.

This jacket was used to carry the complete combat loadout of the average infantryman, from ammunition and anti-tank grenades to blankets and rations. See attached video for more uniform history and details.

Lovingly named the Vierfruchtpyama (four fruit pajamas) by Swiss troops, we think you'll find the Alpenflage field jacket to be wanting in neither drip nor pockets.

This is technically not the official designation for these jackets. They were made in at least two types during mass production: the Kampfanzug 61 and Kampfanzug 70.

      Sizing Guide:

Model is 5' 11" and 160 pounds wearing a size medium.

Swiss sizing uses pit-to-pit measurements in centimeters to denote sizes.

To find your pit-to-pit size, take a well-fitting shirt and lay it flat on the ground. Measure it from armpit to armpit. This number is your pit-to-pit size measurement.

For example, a medium (48) measures 19" from pit to pit.

A large (52) measures 20.5" from pit to pit.

An extra large (56) measures 22" from pit to pit.
